A Barrel of Laughs at The Glee Club
I'm not being funny but it seems the capital of comedy is about to have their crown stolen. The Glee Club in Glasgow is more than a contender; pulling in top name comedians and, as a result, crowds.
The premise is simple, if somewhat unique. What three things do people want?
The Glee Club provides all three in lush surroundings. We were invited along to their Friday night gig where three excellent performers had us in stitches; Liam Withnail, Ian Stone and Janey Godley, all beautifully introduced by Damian Clark.
The best option would be to pre-order any food and drink you want on the evening. You simply arrive, pass over your tokens and take your seat. Your food will be promptly delivered to you before the show even begins.
Entry is from 7pm, with shows typically starting around 8.15pm. That gives you plenty of time to get settled, get your ice bucket with fizz and settle down to enjoy a cracking night. Each act is around 20 minutes long with an interval in between - it is set up to ensure you can get plenty of food and drink (and toilet breaks) without missing a minute of the action.
Whilst the food and drink are fantastic, the service quick and staff super obliging, the selling point is, of course, the comedians themselves. With such a high calibre of performers vying to get a spot on the every growing line up, it is a place to see firm favourites and new up and coming acts, destined to be stars. With the owner sitting keeping a careful watch, it is clear they strive for quality. We laughed ourselves silly in the venue, on the bus and at home an hour later. The highlight was star attraction Janey Godley, but each of the others were utterly hilarious and I will make a point of sniffing them out at the Fringe, should they be there.
The location is incredibly handy too, mere minutes from Buchanan Bus Station, a welcome relief as we went on the coldest night of the year.
The Glee Club is absolutely unique. It has an irresistible draw to it that will keep us coming back time and time again. If you are looking for a good, fun night out, a date, a hen party, a take yer mammy out for a laugh, The Glee Club has you covered.
With thanks to the team at The Glee Club and Burt Green for tickets, drink tokens and food for two. Although I was invited, the opinions as my own.
