Dinner at La Bonne Auberge

There is always something special about peeking behind the doors of landmarks you pass regularly. Whether it is the deliciously tucked-away Caledonian Hotel, or even the King's Wark in Leith. One such place that has always held that mystery for me is La Bonne Auberge in Glasgow. It is one of the first buildings that greets you when you hop off the bus; its orange glow has called my name many times.

The restaurant has been going strong for over forty years and it is clear to see why; the staff provide a first class service, the welcoming atmosphere leaves a lovely impression, and the food.... oh the food!

Those who know me know I love anything remotely French. The restaurant, neighbouring the Holiday Inn, is situated in the heart of Glasgow's theatre district. The decor reflects both elements beautifully - picturesque French pictures and posters on the walls, a bricked interior with brasserie style mirrors and Parisian-style chandeliers; you could easily be next door to L'Opera.

Upon arrival, a caraffe of red wine was brought to our table - part of the restaurant's successful Steak Night deals. For £49.95, you and your lucky guest can enjoy two succulent rib eyes, crispy frites, the caraffe of red or white and the most beautiful chocolate tortes you can hope to enjoy.

I will admit that this picture does not look the most appealing; it is my steak DROWNED in Bernaise but it was my choice to make a steak soup and it was absolutely AMAZING. Too often I am left underwhelmed by not only how the steak is cooked (in this case perfectly), I wonder how kitchen staff expect me to enjoy my meal with a thimble-full of sauce. Not at La Bonne Auberge my friends!!!

As a side, we had some succulent greens and the crispiest, crunchiest frites I have tried; both delicious. Phil seemed pretty happy too,  given he didn't lift his head once whilst eating. But the main event was yet to come.

The chocolate torte was spectacular. I thought I would be too full to eat such a rich desert but it was so smooth and velvety it was almost like liquid. For the price, I thought we would get a good meal. What we discovered was something utterly delicious and excellent value for money.

It is testament to the staff and managerial team, who were so pleasant and courteous we couldn't help but feel we had been to the restaurant one hundred times before.

La Bonne Auberge, once you discover it, is a little gem that will keep calling you back for more.
