It has only been in the past few months that we have been regular visitors to this fast paced and creative city. Their reputation of gaming, design, jute and jam have created quite a bit of intrigue for me; I adore the V&A, their theatre is second to none, but most importantly there is a lovely little atmosphere.
We were delighted to try Daisy Tasker, part of Hotel Indigo. An unusual name you might think and I went north (all 58 minutes of it) completely unaware of what it meant. I deliberately didn’t look at photos or research. I just wanted to understand why a restaurant was named after a flower/person/cow.
What’s behind the name, I hear you ask. The story is fascinating.
Hotel Indigo and its restaurant, Daisy Tasker are situated on an old Jute Mill run by the Baxter Brothers who had a series of Mills through the late 1800s early 1900s. One worker, an unknown little girl named Daisy, started her 50-year long mill career there, taking up role of social secretary.
She was responsible for setting up gatherings, parties and more. Whilst the job itself must have been taxing, workers enjoyed a great social life thanks to the lady who brought the fun.
As a token of appreciation to this wonderful lady, the team decided to honour her in an unusual way.
The restaurant is steeped in history. The team have stayed true to the feel of the building with original bricked ceilings, pillars and a hugely rustic feel. They have spun a scandi-twist to the interior ensuring it is modern and comfortable without losing its historic appeal.
The team really play with the past; clock in cards allow visitors to check off dining experiences and win prizes. Tables have nametags with beautiful phrases, paying homage to Mr Paddington Bear and his Marmalade that sits pride of place near the dining area.
The Larder Lunch concept also plays to the worker theme. You can pop in to simply help yourself to the delicious salad and pastry options, add three tapas style plates or one larger plate. Have all three if you can fit it in! Prove you work on a Saturday or Sunday and you get money off. Such imaginative and relevant thinking.
So. The food.
Phil and I opted to sample the Dasy Tasker buffet and have three tapas plates each. The buffet, which regularly changes, included coronation chicken, peppers, potato salad, caeser salad and much more. Oils and side dressings were also readily available.
For our three plates, I had Arbroath Smokie Fishcakes, Chicken and Apricot Terrine and Courgette Tagine – all delicious. Phil enjoyed hand cut chips with gravy, pea and watercress soup and the fishcakes.
The restaurant is attached to a glorious hotel. It is simpply stunning with nods to local industry, luxury and opulence. Anyone staying at Hotel Indigo wouldn’t need to leave the complex to find somewhere stunning to eat, drink and enjoy yourself. I know Daisy Tasker herself would absolutely love it.
